The Beechgrove Garden episode 20 2018

The programme comes this week from Callander, the largest town within the picturesque Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Callander sits on the Highland boundary fault, dividing the highlands and the lowlands. A major fault zone that crosses Scotland from Arran and Helensburgh on West coast to Stonehaven on the East coast, it separates 2 distinctly different geological terrains, from rolling farmland to the south of Callander to the contrasting more dramatic rugged hills and mountains of the Highlands.

Jim started by reminding us that Callander became familiar to millions as the fictional ‘Tannochbrae’ in the television series ‘Dr. Finlay’s Casebook’ and Jim, Carole, George and Brian were standing in a similar position to the view made famous by the series. Dominating the town to the north are the Callander Crags, and Ben Ledi (at 879 metres or 2,884 ft is nearly a Munro) lies north-west of Callander. The Callandar Crags rise dramatically from the town centre and are covered in woodlands with many hidden routes which radiate out into he surrounding landscape and provide access to area of outstanding natural beauty.
