Moncreiffe Island allotments

The allotment gardens on Moncreiffe Island were first registered in the season 1896/97, so we’ve been there for 122 years this year. The original site of 5 acres has been pared back slightly over the years to just over 4.5 acres. The site is rented from Perth & Kinross Council and comprises 72 plots, with a standard plot size of 10 poles (250 square yards) – there are a few half-plots (125 square yards) – the latter tend to be around the perimeter of the site and are more shaded. The soil is fairly neutral and will grow most things. Despite our title of Perth Working Men’s Garden Association, at least 50% of the plot-holders are women.
