Gardeners World 2018 episode 2

In Gardeners World 2018 episode 2, it is the prime time for bare-root plants and Monty makes plans for a bumper harvest of fruit when he adds raspberries to his fruit garden and gives advice on how to plant bare-root trees. He also gives tips on what we should be doing now to get our gardens ready for spring.

Throughout the year, Carol Klein will be immersed in the world of plants and be giving us detailed profiles of the best seasonal highlights. This week she explores one of the unsung heroes of the spring border, the Daphne. If you are yearning for warmer weather and your garden currently lacks interest, Joe Swift has designs on brightening up dull and uninteresting spaces with pots full of colour that can be planted now.

Gardeners World 2018 episode 2:

Bulbs: naturalising

Drifts of daffodils, snowdrops and crocus in open grass are one of the classic signs of spring. Although they look like the work of nature, they are simple to create and will last for many years.

Ornamental grasses: cutting back

Ornamental grasses fall into two main groups, evergreen and deciduous. Deciduous grasses need cutting back annually so that they will look their best. Evergreens just require a tidy-up.

Mushroom compost

Mushroom compost can often be bought cheaply in bulk for use as a soil conditioner or mulch. It is usually available as ‘spent’ mushroom compost, referring to the fact it is the compost left over from mushroom farming.

Peppers

Sweet peppers – also known as bell peppers – are so versatile in cooking. They can be used raw in salads and cooked in stir-fries and casseroles. Peppers will grow well in a greenhouse, but will also thrive in pots outside if you place them in a warm, sunny spot.

Grow your own raspberries

Raspberries are one of the most popular summer fruits and are very easy to grow. Different training techniques mean raspberries can be grown in gardens of any size and in containers.
