Gardeners World episode 17 2019

Gardeners World episode 17 2019: Monty catches up with summer maintenance in his wildlife garden and recommends plants for deep, dry shade under trees, as well as giving advice on what to plant now for late summer harvests.

Carol Klein travels to Aberglasney Gardens in Wales to explore the best planting partners for that most ephemeral of perennials, the Thalictrum, while Joe Swift is in Devon meeting a plantsman who has used plants from all over the globe to create an extraordinary garden. Adam Frost joins a group of gardeners in Worksop where gardening has helped to create a sense of community and wellbeing, Nick Bailey goes to RHS Garden Wisley to find out more about the lily beetle and we meet a gardener whose mission to create a wildlife garden from scratch has produced remarkable results.

Florence fennel

Florence fennel, a wonderfully ornamental vegetable, is grown for its swollen leaf bases or ‘bulbs’ and edible leaves. When using in salads, the flavour can be improved by slicing the bulb and putting it in a bowl of water and ice cubes in the fridge for an hour. Steam, grill or boil the ‘bulbs’ and serve with cheese sauce or butter; infuse the leaves in vinegar or add as garnish to salad.

Grow your own spuds

Potatoes are a versatile vegetable that is eaten all year round. The tubers vary in size, colour, texture and taste and can be grown from spring to autumn. Potatoes require an open, frost-free site with deep, fertile, moisture-retentive and crumbly soil for high quality and heavy yields. Improve soils by adding organic matter, such as well-rotted manure, in the autumn.

Before planting, supplement with a general fertilizer, such as Growmore or blood, fish and bone, applied to the soil surface or spread along the sides of the drill during sowing, at the rate of 1kg per 10m (2.2lb per 33ft) row. Half of this amount will be enough if the garden is known to be fertile.
