Gardeners World episode 20 2019

Gardeners World episode 20 2019: With Monty away, this week Gardeners’ World joins Adam Frost in his own garden to catch up with its progress since our last visit in spring. Adam dispels the confusion of the summer pruning of wisteria and shows us an ingenious solution to planting in dry shade under trees.

Arit Anderson is in Germany finding out about the incredible transformation of a disused industrial site into a thriving and beautiful park beloved by visitors and the local community, and Rachel de Thame is in Gloucestershire finding out about the one hundred year history of the gardens at Kiftsgate Court. Nick Bailey profiles the many varieties of summer flowering clematis and gives tips on their care and pruning and we travel to Kent, where Frances Tophill shows us how her allotment has grown over the last few months.

How to prune wisteria

Wisteria needs regular pruning to keep the growth and size under control, but it will also improve the flowering display. Although it seems complicated, wisteria pruning is quite simple if you follow our simple guide.

Wisterias can be left to ramble unchecked where space allows but will usually flower more freely and regularly if pruned twice a year. The removal of growth in summer allows better air circulation and more sunlight to reach the base of the young growths, encouraging better ripening of the wood and improving the chances of flower bud formation. Restricting the amount of vegetative growth and encouraging short, flowering spurs will result in more flowers.

What is grafting?

The purpose of grafting is to combine one plant’s qualities of flowering or fruiting with the roots of another that offers vigour and resilience. This is a difficult task and requires lots of skill and practice. In most cases, trees and shrubs are available to buy already grafted onto a rootstock.

How to prune clematis

There is a very simple rule of thumb that can be applied to pruning clematis if you have lost a plant label and/or don’t know what the plant is called. As always, there are exceptions to the rule but they are few. If you garden further north in the British Isles or elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere you need to adjust pruning times accordingly. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere your adjustment needs to take account of the reversed seasons.
