Gardeners World episode 9 2016

As the growing season picks up a pace, Monty is sowing vegetables and planting out the scented plants which he brought back from the Malvern Spring Festival.

Carol is delving into the hedgerows and rooting at the bases of walls, fences and trees as she begins her journey to investigate why plants thrive in challenging conditions, and we return to Sissinghurst to find out about the changes Troy Scott-Smith is making to the world-famous white garden.

In Gardeners World episode 9 2016:

Clematis

Clematis is one of the most popular garden plants and no wonder; this plant can be grown on walls, pergolas, frames, in containers, or left to scramble through trees and shrubs.

Containers: planting up

Containers filled with seasonal or permanent plants are extremely versatile. They can brighten up a corner of the garden, provide handy herbs by the kitchen or make the entrance look welcoming. Yet, life in containers can be tough for plants, so choose the right compost and carry out regular maintenance to ensure they put on a good show.

Honeysuckle ( Lonicera )

Lonicera (honeysuckle) are popular garden plants with highly perfumed flowers. There are climbing honeysuckles, which are wonderful draped over pergolas and supports, and evergreen shrubby types, which make good hedging plants.

Peas

There’s nothing like the flavour of freshly picked peas. Use them as quickly as possible once picked as they lose their sweetness. Dwarf varieties of peas don’t need much in the way of support. The easiest types to grow are mangetout and sugar snap varieties.

Ferns: hardy

Low-maintenance and tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, ferns complement any shade plant combination. From tiny specimens grown in walls to the royal fern at six feet tall, there’s room for ferns in every sized garden.
