Nigella: At My Table ep.5

White chocolate

White chocolate

Nigella shares ideas for feasts throughout the day. Nigella’s savoury take on French toast is an ideal choice for weekend brunch or a comforting and quick supper. With friends to entertain, Nigella rustles up an informal Mediterranean dish for dinner – juicy spiced lamb kofta with garlic sauce.

For pudding, her guests are treated to a delicate-tasting rose and pepper pavlova with strawberries, inspired by her grandfather’s penchant for strawberries with a grinding of pepper. There is also an aromatic golden egg curry and a delicious white chocolate cheesecake.

The shades of my ancestors are, no doubt, horrified that 1) this is an unbaked cheesecake and 2) white chocolate finds its way into it. So be it. Besides, I have no need to be defensive about this: the white chocolate is only a delicate presence here; nothing to offend a white-chocolate-hater. And, moreover, it helps the cheesecake set in the fridge overnight to a perfect, tenderly firm consistency.

2. Parmesan French toast

While obviously a contender for weekend brunch, this savoury take on French toast is, for me, a perfect early supper when I feel like something comforting and quick. It’s also exactly what I need when I’ve come back in late, having uncharacteristically and disturbingly gone without dinner.

 5. Golden egg curry

Golden egg curry

This – called masak lemak telur in Malaysian – is very far removed from the egg curries I remember from my early youth, and would much prefer to forget. What i have here are eggs poached in a rich, aromatic, turmeric-tinted, tamarind-sharp, coconutty sauce or soup.
