How to build a dog door

“Can someone please let the dogs out?” is common refrain all over the country but could be a thing of the past. Adam’s going to show you how to install a dog door using off-the-shelf products. As he demonstrates how easy it is do this DIY job, he’ll also show you how to fix up some of the common damage often created by pooches who are desperate to hit the great outdoors. Like all members of the family, your dogs need their own space. And now you can give it to them.

If you have a furry friend who likes to go in and out of the house, you might want to consider building a dog door for them. A dog door is a small opening in your door that allows your dog to pass through without your assistance. It can save you time and hassle, and give your dog more freedom and comfort. Here are some steps to build a dog door yourself.

1. Measure your dog’s height and width. You want to make sure the dog door is big enough for your dog to fit through comfortably, but not too big that it lets in too much cold air or unwanted visitors. A good rule of thumb is to make the dog door about two inches wider and taller than your dog’s measurements.

2. Choose a location for the dog door. You can install the dog door on any exterior door that leads to your backyard or patio. However, you should avoid doors that have glass panels, as they are harder to cut and may shatter. You should also avoid doors that are too close to the ground, as they may let in water or dirt.

3. Mark the outline of the dog door on the door. Use a pencil and a ruler to draw a rectangle on the door where you want the dog door to be. Make sure the bottom edge of the rectangle is about three inches above the floor, so your dog doesn’t have to stoop too low to get through.

4. Cut out the hole for the dog door. Use a drill to make four holes at the corners of the rectangle, then use a jigsaw or a reciprocating saw to cut along the pencil lines. Be careful not to damage the door or hurt yourself.

5. Attach the dog door frame and flap. You can buy a ready-made dog door kit from a pet store or online, or you can make your own using wood, metal, or plastic. The kit should come with a frame that fits into the hole you cut, and a flap that hangs from the top of the frame and covers the opening. Follow the instructions that come with the kit to attach the frame and flap to the door using screws or nails.

6. Test the dog door and train your dog to use it. Make sure the dog door opens and closes smoothly, and that there are no gaps or sharp edges that could hurt your dog. Then, entice your dog to go through the door using treats or toys. Praise your dog when they use the door successfully, and repeat until they get used to it.

Congratulations! You have just built a dog door for your canine companion. Enjoy the convenience and benefits of having a dog door in your home.
