Browsing Harbourside

Costa visits Taronga Zoo to meet the team of volunteers who care for the historic foreshore site; and learn how removing unwanted weeds can provide feed for the animals. Taronga zoo opened on Sydney’s North Shore in 1916. An Australian icon, with spectacular views of the city and harbour, the zoo sits on a 70-ha site and is home to around 4000 animals. The site has a rich cultural history, but horticulture is also key. Alongside the specialist zoologists, works a horticultural team who care for the gardens within the zoo itself and the surrounding bushland.

Each month groups of volunteers meet regularly, co-ordinated by horticulturist Petra Buhrich, to work in the natural areas along the spectacular Sydney harbour foreshore. This small group is part of the hundreds of volunteers that work across the organisation. Petra says her three groups are made up of like-minded people who care for the environment and enjoy the outdoors. “We get a really big mix of people from students to retirees, locals to people an hour away,” Petra says. “Some with experience, others with no knowledge of the Australian bush.” One of the vollies, Di has been doing this for 15 years!

Flower Power

Jane meets a doctor who has transformed her front garden into a thriving flower farm, growing beautiful blooms for her own floral arranging practice. She has transformed the front yard of her house into a colourful flower garden. It not only inspires her personally, but also provides a lot of flowers for the arrangements that she makes. She grows a combination of native and exotic flowers to create beautiful contrasting bouquets.

She finds that flowers help as a counterpoint to the medical work that she does. ‘Gardening is quite meditative, it is like designing, it’s artistic. I use a completely different part of my brain for geriatrics. And you don’t need to talk to flowers, which is quite nice!’ Dr Wang shows Jane how to create a simple hand-tied ‘posy’ arrangement using flowers from the garden.

Pest Proof Patch – Gardening Australia episode 22 2022

Tino shows how to pest-proof your vegie patch. We all love to encourage wildlife in our gardens, but there is nothing more frustrating than when your painstakingly grown produce is destroyed by unwelcome garden visitors. Tino shows how to protect your vegie patch from animals, as well as keeping it safe and functional. Identifying the culprit is the first step to getting on top of the problem, and Tino shares his top tips to stop wildlife completely annihilating your vegie garden.

Dandelion Drink

Hannah turns a common weed into a delicious drink. Dandelion roots can be turned into a caffeine-free coffee substitute, containing a range of vitamins and minerals. This is one more easy garden recipe to add to your repertoire! Once roasted and ground, it has a very similar colour to coffee and a rich, bitter, and earthy flavour. You can even add it to your coffee as the taste alone can take some getting used to.

Dandelion (Taraxacum sect. Taraxacum) is easily recognisable from the serrated bright green leaves that grow in a rosette, and vibrant yellow flowers that turn into the well-known seed heads that blow in the wind. They look very similar to Cat’s Ear and Sow Thistle (their leaves are edible too!) but the main differences are that dandelion flowers grow on single, unbranched stems and the stems are hollow.
