Paul Hollywood Eats... Mexico episode 1

Paul Hollywood Eats Mexico episode 1: In Mexico City, Paul samples the best taco he’s ever had, discovers how to make Pan Dulce, attempts to eat a tarantula, goes on a takeaway food tour and has a go at fire hockey.

In Mexico City, Hollywood was sent for a day out with an all-female biker gang. They took him for breakfast – to McDonald’s, because they wanted to demonstrate how the menu insults their cuisine. Then it was sushi for lunch, which turned out to be deep-fried and “perhaps goes a little way to explaining why seven out of 10 Mexicans are overweight”.

Finally, they treated him to a Doriloco. This is a split bag of Doritos topped with grated carrot, pickled pigskin, chilli powder and – wait for it – gummy sweets. All slathered in hot sauce. Hollywood’s verdict: “Hideous.” Granted, he told us that he’d eaten a tasty taco, but we had to take his word for it seeing as it was made with doner kebab meat. He also had a go at baked tarantula and scorpion, presented on a bed of guacamole and wrapped in a tortilla. Hollywood informed us that they didn’t taste of anything.

Paul Hollywood sets off on another culinary voyage of discovery, as he explores the character, culture and history of Mexico through its food and drink.

Paul Hollywood

The elder statesman of Bake Off, Paul is the only member of the team who has been with the show since its very beginning, originally judging alongside Mary Berry until the move to Channel 4 in 2017. Paul also hosts the US version of the programme, The American Baking Competition and has served as head baker at a number of hotels in the UK and abroad, after first beginning his career at his father’s bakery when he was still in his teens.

Although it was Bake Off that really made Paul a household name, he had made some other TV appearances beforehand on shows including The Heaven and Earth Show and This Morning, while since making his name as a judge he has appeared on a number of programmes including his own show Paul Hollywood’s Pies and Puds.

Paul is known for his often harsh comments and for setting frequently challenging tasks in the signature challenge, while his coveted “Hollywood handshakes” reserved for the very best bakes have become a popular feature of the show.
