There’s plenty to catch up on at the Beechgrove Garden and a bountiful harvest to enjoy too. At Cove allotments, near Aberdeen, the small plots are packed in cheek-by-jowl making it easy for the plotters to socialise and of course, learn from each other. As Jim says, ‘every day is a school day’.
Back at Beechgrove, Jim checks up on the progress of his tomatoes and there’s lemons for gin and tonics up in the conservatory. It’s all looking very rosy when Jim meets the Duchess of Northumberland at the spectacular Alnwick Garden, one of the world’s most ambitious new gardens.

Scatter Mixes and Decking Garden
Carole started her review of the garden in the Long Border where she looked at the progress of the scatter seed mixes sown here. Four different sowings had taken place since late April, each three weeks apart. The last sowing, made at the end of June, is just starting to germinate.
Cove Bay Allotments
Jim visited Nether Loirston Growers’ Association allotments at Cove Bay just south of Aberdeen. This is a small allotment site, with the small plots crammed in, making it easy to socialise and share gardening know how. Jim spoke to Marlene, the Association Chairperson, who explained that the allotments have been running for just five years and there are 31 members.
Alnwick Garden – Beechgrove Garden episode 14 2015
During the break Jim was thrilled to visit Alnwick Garden south of Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland. This is described as the world’s most extraordinary garden. Jim first visited here in 2002, just as the cascade was finished and the topiary hedging was being put in place.
He went back to catch up on progress. Jim admired the Garden’s extraordinary centrepiece, the Grand Cascade which is a magnificent tumbling mass of water with spellbinding displays, and is the largest water feature of its kind in the country. It has four different spectacular water displays which take place randomly, every half hour.
