In Beechgrove Garden episode 7 2016: Carole creates a chef’s windowsill as she grows a range of micro salads, while Chris takes on the job of revamping the old heather garden and turns it into our own piece of an ancient Scottish hill top in miniature.
George and Jim are off on a bulb-lover’s busman’s holiday and indulging in more than a little ‘tulip fever’ as they visit world-famous Keukenhof Botanic Park near Amsterdam to see the mind-blowing bulb displays. It was a beautiful sunny spring day at Beechgrove. It was time to get on with some gardening jobs outside after last week’s weather. After the success of a commercially bought scatter mix last year, Carole decided to challenge Jim, George, Chris, and Brian to come up with their own successful hardy annual scatter mix.
The Beechgrove Garden episode 7 2016:
1. Vegetable planting
A couple of weeks ago Jim was sowing root vegetable seeds into peat pots. This was in a bid to extend the vegetable growing season. It’s now time to plant them into the raised beds alongside, Jim is also going to direct sow the same varieties for comparison. Before planting he added some growmore fertiliser to the compost in the raised bed and raked it through.
 2. Sowing Peas
Carole and George were doing something similar to Jim – sowing pea seeds and planting up pea plants for this year. This year we are growing 14 different varieties, just a small selection of what is available from the seed companies. Carole was planting up some dwarf pea plants into pots.
 3. Beautiful Bulbs at Keukenhof
Jim and George were at Keukenhof Botanic Park near Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Here more than 7 million bulbs bloom in spring, with a total of 800 varieties of tulips over 80 acres. All the bulbs are planted by hand – every year. A unique and unforgettable experience. This is the 67th year Keukenhof has opened its doors
just for 8 weeks in the spring of the year.
