Gardeners World episode 30 2016: In our final visit to Longmeadow this year, Monty gives advice on the plants that need winter protection and thinks ahead to colourful spring bouquets by planting bulbs in the cutting garden.

The glory of summer may be over in most gardens but Carol goes to Worcestershire in search of some autumn colour, in a garden designed to reach its peak of flowering right now. Frances finds out whether there is a north-south divide in the yield and taste of vegetables grown at RHS Rosemoor in Devon and RHS Harlow Carr in Yorkshire.

Zephaniah Lindo investigates the relationship between roots and microscopic fungi, while Nick Bailey injects new life into a small, neglected garden in London. And Alan Power spends a day in the gardens of Mount Stewart near Belfast to see how they are using historical archive to restore parts of the garden.

How to grow quinces

Large, yellow and aromatic, the fruit of the quince tree will ripen to perfection when grown in a sunny position. They are perfect for turning into jelly, jams or membrillo, a hard preserve eaten with cheese by the Spanish. It is a worthwhile addition to the fruit garden because it is easy to look after and not prone to many of the more common fruit problems.

Bulb planting

Bulbs make a fine display planted in containers or borders, especially daffodils, snowdrops and tulips in spring. They are one of the easiest and most rewarding garden plants to grow. Bulbs are useful for adding colour to spring borders. Tulips come in all shades, from dark purple to white, and bloom at a time of year when many plants offer muted colours. Other bulbs, such as snowdrops and scillas, are some of the earliest flowering plants in the garden, brightening up the short days of very early spring.

How to succeed with tulips

Tulips are amongst the most popular of bulbs, valued for their brilliant flower colours and shapes. Plant in autumn for a show of spring flowers. Choose from a large range to suit the situation.
