In Beechgrove Garden episode 12 2016, Jim and George are planning for jam tomorrow as Jim sorts out the raspberries, while George is a wee bit more exotic and tends to the fig and the vine.
In Garden on a Budget, Carole is with Meike Guijt and family in rural Kennethmont helping mould a garden out of almost nothing. This week, they create a garden table from an old tree stump and plant some edible flowers.
Jim is concerned that gardening is not offered as a career choice for young people. In a mission to find How to Grow a Gardener, Jim visits the enlightened Breadalbane Academy in Aberfeldy, which has practical gardening on the curriculum as well as a beautiful community garden to show for it.
Beechgrove Garden episode 12 2016:
 1. Seed tapes
In a new trial for this year Carole was looking at different methods of seed sowing ofquick maturing vegetable crops. This included sowing seeds direct and also using seed tapes. The first method she used was a simple seed tape which she placed in the bottom of seed drill. Secondly she showed a new type of seed tape which is weed suppressing.
 2. Gardening on a Budget
Back in May Carole’s paid her third visit to Mieke and Jan Guijt garden near Kennethmont in rural Aberdeenshire as part of her Garden on a Budget strand. This time they were in Mieke’s vegetable garden.
 3. Fruit Cage
Before attending to some of the fruit in our fruit cage, Jim was delighted to report that we had had correspondence from Derek and Jet Seeley, 2 New Zealand viewers. Their climate is the exact opposite of Beechgrove’s – hot and dry with warm summers and little rain. To increase the yield of their raspberries they bend the tops of their raspberries canes in an arc shape. He demonstrated how to achieve this using a blackberry; you can use this technique with raspberry.
